This is a virtual event and a fundraiser for the Willamette Heritage Center. I’ll be giving a talk titled, “Mining the Gaps: How a Fiction Writer Re-Imagines History,” which will explore the motivations for and approaches to writing about historical subjects in fiction, the dual roles of research and the imagination, and questions of accuracy and authenticity. In particular, I will address the types of gaps in the historical record that provide rich points of entry for invention, with specific examples from stories set in Salem, the Willamette Valley, and elsewhere in Oregon.
